Avril Lavigne - Hello Kitty | Video Review by Melissa & Lakaiya

Melissa's Review

Avril Lavigne has reigned as the pop punk princess for over twelve years with a vast collection of hits to her name. However she has made things rather complicated by ditching all of her success in this genre and jumping ship to J-Pop. That's right I'm just as confused as you are. The video for her single "Hello Kitty" is a strange combination of miserable back-up dancers, excessive visuals and enough candy to put any individual into a sugar induced coma.

My first impression is that the star is heavily trying to replicate Gwen Stefani's infamous Harajuku girls. However it's a miserable attempt as her understanding of kawaii is limited to the stereotypical bright colours, sushi and candy stores. The dancing is lacklustre at best and her expressions are as fake as the cupcakes on her dress.

Moving on to the track itself the lyrics are unsurprisingly just as bad.  One of my favourite lines being "Like a fat kid on a pack of Smarties." Yes you heard correctly. The worst part of this being is that this track took four people to write including Nickelback front man Chad Kroeger. Four people's creative genius resulted in Avril prancing around asking someone to chuck a cupcake at her.

I digress, the track is awash with gratuitous dubstep, screechy vocals and clickbait content galore. Instead of progressing in her career this mess of a single has seriously hindered her growth as an artist. Stick to what you do best Avril unless you wish to face the wrath of the critics claws again.

Lakaiya's Review

I love Avril Lavigne before I start and I think that her album was one of the best pop releases of 2013. However, this prancing around like a 15-year-old act is getting tiresome and quite frankly pissing me off.

Finding out that Avril Lavigne was releasing a video for the worst song off her latest self tilted album, ‘Hello Kitty’ I just hoped that the video would better than the song, the terrible terrible song. But no, it’s worse.

My review of this video is that it’s really bad and her worst video to date. But the most annoying thing is the fake bratty strum of her guitar that she does. It was cute 10 years ago when she was singing about guys that wouldn’t open up the door, but now, turning 30 this year it looks so sad and desperate.

Her hair looks nice, but sadly that’s the only good thing about this video. Sorry Avril but after watching this painful video, it’s definitely time to grow up.
